Abstract
1408503 Capacitors; resistors GTI CORP 22 May 1973 [19 June 1972] 24425/73 Headings H1M and HIS An electrical component 10 is encapsulated and has leads 17 connected to the uneven surfaces of terminals 12 on it by locating the component within glass sleeve 11 introducing the enlarged ends 14 of leads 17 into the sleeve so as to confine between ends 14 and the terminals 12 a composition 16 comprising glass, metal and noble metal oxide particles and heating the assembly so as to fuse sleeve 11 to ends 14 and to component 10 and to decompose the metal oxide to metal, the reaction product being a unitary porous mass occupying the space between the leads and terminals (Fig. 1, not shown) and providing a good electrical connection between them. The heating is carried out in a reducing atmosphere and where the component is a capacitor having BaTiO 3 and TiO 2 as dielectric, the oxygen generated locally prevents reduction of the dielectric to a semiconducting state. As shown a ceramic capacitor has terminals 12 constituted by metal coatings having a rough surface and composition containing metal and oxide is applied as a paste to the surface of ends 14. The noble metal oxide may be palladium or ruthenium oxide and the metal silver. The component may alternatively be a resistor.
