Abstract

1408213 Adjustable seat mechanisms F KEIPER 22 Feb 1973 [22 Feb 1972] 8698/73 Addition to 1347663 Heading E2F [Also in Division A4] A hinge 10 comprises a part 12, to be attached to a seat, connected by a pivot pin 14 to a part 13 to be attached to an adjustable backrest, and locking means comprising toothed portions 15, 16 coupled to respective hinge parts, and a handle 43 controlling operating means comprising a first operating element 19 for moving the toothed portion 16 into engagement with the portion 15 and a second operating element 20 for moving it out of engagement, the elements being pivoted at 14, 23 and connected by a link 28, the element 20 being further connected by a link 35 to a crank 38 on a coupling member 39 rotatable about an axis parallel to or coincident with that of the pivot pin 14. The axis of the member 39 is preferably the same as that of the pin 14, and the member has a non-circular opening which can receive an end of a shaft (42), Fig 1 (not shown) for coupling the hinge 10 to a hinge (11), at the other side of the seat, which is similar but lacks a control handle 43. The operating elements 19, 20 have respective cam surfaces 22, 25 which engage a stud 26 on the toothed portion 16, and two springs 50 act on the links 28 and 35 to urge the toothed portions together to lock the backrest. The connection between the link 35 of the hinge 10 and the crank 38 includes a pin and slot connection 37, 36 so that the toothed portions 16 of the hinges 10, (11) may return to the locking position independently on release of the lever 43. A spring 53 biases the backrest forwards when it is unlocked.
