Abstract

1407836 Trapped gullies J M JOHANNESSEN and P P SORIENSEN 27 Sept 1972 [28 Sept 1971] 44672/72 Heading E1C [Also in Division G3] A centrifugal brake 5 for use in a gully or like basin 1 of a drainage system to restrict the maximum rate of flow of drainage water from the gully into a sewer system comprises a housing defining a braking chamber 16 of generally circular cross-section and having a fluid inlet 19 opening into the interior of the housing and directing incoming liquid tangentially into the chamber adjacent its periphery, and a fluid outlet 15 leading out of the braking chamber at or near the centre of its crosssection and formed to act as a syphon when the brake is used with the fluid inlet at the bottom of the housing (i.e. as shown, the axis of the circular cross-section being horizontal), and when the water level in the chamber covers the entry to the outlet 15. In the embodiment of Figs 6 and 8, the brake 5 is embodied in a two-part casing 13, 14 having an inlet 24 which in use is submerged in the drainage water in the basin 1, the. casing being sealed in an opening 3 of the basin by a sealing ring 6 and groove 4. The casing is formed to provide a venting tube 23, a filter in the form of a perforated plate 21 through which the liquid, when above a predetermined level, passes to a chamber 20, an inlet tube 19 leading upwardly from the chamber 20 to the cylindrical braking chamber 16 so as to constitute a syphon and at the same time serve to direct the liquid, when a flow has been established, tangentially against the internal peripheral wall of the chamber 16. A baffle plate 17 is positioned to trap air and disturb the rotation of the liquid to increase the braking effect of the chamber 16. The outlet 15 leads via outlet tube 18 to the sewer pipe. In operation, the liquid flows by syphon action without appreciable rotation in the chamber 16 until a predetermined head in the basin 1 is exceeded, after which the liquid rotates in the chamber 16 and the flow is braked so as to remain substantially constant until a much greater head is established whereafter the relationship between flow and pressure head follows a second curve (Fig 10, not shown). In the simplified form of Fig 12, the syphoning effect does not occur, since the device 5 merely consists of a chamber formed by casing halves 13', 14', tangential inlet passage 19', baffle plate 17' and outlet arrangement 15', 18', whereby braking of the flow occurs almost immediately and the flow/head relation ship is according to the second curve (Fig 10).
