Abstract
1407829 Mixing chambers DEMAG KUNSTSTOFFTECHNIK GmbH 11 Sept 1972 [15 Sept 1971] 42134/72 Heading B1C [Also in Division B5] An injection moulding machine comprises a mixing chamber 7 adapted to receive pressurised liquid constituents and connected to a mould cavity 8 by a sprue runner 9 which has at least two restrictions 13, 16 of fixed crosssectional shape formed in it. The cross sectional area of the sprue runner 9 at the inlet end is smaller than or equal to that at its outlet end to decrease or maintain, respectively, the velocity of the mixed constituents fed therethrough. In one example, the mixing chamber 7 is approximately rhombus shaped in cross section (Fig 3, not shown) and is connected to a portion 14 of circular cross section. A second restriction 16 is formed by a shoulder protruding from the upper wall of the runner 9. The restriction may be arched in the flow direction as seen in Fig 2. The machine may be used for moulding foamed articles, the constituents being fed to the chamber 7 through pipes 11 (only one shown). A closure slider 6 is actuated by a fluid pressure piston 5. Figs 5-7 (not shown) show a modification in which the mixing chamber (7') is circular in section and the passage portion (14') is of square section. The mixing chamber may be of variable volume, maximum volume being used during injection but immediately after injection the bottom and cover of the chamber may be moved together.
