Abstract
1407714 Hardness indenter DE BEERS INDUSTRIAL DIAMOND DIVISION Ltd 19 July 1973 [19 July 1972] 34410/73 Heading G1S The degree of penetration of an indenter is dependent on the crystal plane being indented and on the orientation of the indenter with respect to that plane so that often the hardness number for a material varies through a range. The present diamond indenter (H 5 ) Table 1 (not shown) produces a separate and distinct range for each material shown which does not overlap the range of the other materials tested, and as such it produces results which are unlike those produced by known indenters coded (H K ) and (H B ) in the table which produce ranges which overlap for different materials. It is stated that these unique results are produced by providing the indenter with a shape (e.g. a pentagon) providing a non-crystalline symmetry, i.e. it does not have the crystal symmetry of the substance from which it is made.
