Abstract

1407511 Curable polyimides TRW Inc 12 July 1972 [12 July 1971] 32669/72 Heading C3R [Also in Division B5] A method of preparing curable polyimide prepolymers comprises adding maleic anhydride to a mixture of polyamine and polyanhydride and simultaneously or subsequently adding cyclopentadiene, the molar ratios of maleic anhydride : polyanhydride being 0À05 to 1À0 and cyclopentadiene : maleic anhydride being 0À01 to 1À5. Numerous polyanhydrides, polyamines and solvents are specified. In examples reaction is effected between 4,4<SP>1</SP>-diaminodiphenyl methane, 3,31,4,41 - benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride, maleic anhydride and differing amounts of cyclopentadiene (molar ratio cyclopentadiene : maleic anhydride being 1À0, 0À5, 0À25 and 0À01) in dimethylformamide mixed with toluene; a first fraction of prepolymer is isolated on cooling and a second on stirring the filtrate in water. Solutions of the separate fractions are combined and used to impregnate fibreglass cloth which is laminated under heat and pressure. Reference is made to Specifications 1,255,935; 1,241,445 and 1,238,045.
