Abstract
1407049 Waveguides INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 29 Sept 1972 [30 Nov 1971] 45005/72 Heading G2J [Also in Divisions H3-H5] An optical waveguide comprises a solid material 401 having at least one surface upon which the waves are propagated, input and output means, e.g. transducers, 406, 409, for coupling waves on and off the surface, a first longitudinal region 407 on the surface bounded by longitudinal ridges 403, 404, which provide a sharp discontinuity for the waves, and a plurality of second longitudinal regions 405A ... D parallel to and spaced from the region 407. The material 401 may be alumina-doped SiO 2 on a fused quartz substrate 402, the regions 403 ... 405 being metallic, e.g. gold, or a dielectric material. If metallic, variable voltage may be applied to them to vary the refractive index of the material (501), Fig. 5 (not shown). In another embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), regions (601 ... 603) are diffused or ion implanted in the surface (604) to confine the waves to the region (606). The width of one of the regions 403 ... 405 plus an adjacent depression approximately equals the width of the region 407.
