Abstract

1407026 Feeding and collating sheets McCAIN MFG CORP 18 Aug 1972 38687/72 Heading B8R Sheets or signatures are piled in a hopper 10, Fig. 6, and separated from the bottom by an oscillating suction cup 26, while the weight of the pile is relieved by a cam-operated finger 50 which is inserted into the pile above the bottom sheet and then moved upwards. The sheet is transferred to grippers on axially spaced discs 25, Fig. 8, each disc having two grippers 20-1, 20-2 cam-operated to grip a sheet from the cup 26 and release it on to a conveyer having a series of pins 76 spaced apart slightly more than the sheet width, the sheet being previously disposed on the conveyer by radial air blasts through perforations 89. The conveyer may move parallel or at right-angles to the drum axis. Two or more hoppers are arranged along the conveyer whereby sheets from the hoppers are collated in the spaces between the pins. In one form, a plurality of conveyers 75, Fig. 4, are arranged at right-angles to and spaced along a primary saddle or flat conveyer SD, each secondary conveyer 75 feeding from two hoppers such as A, B. For assembling a magazine for stapling, each conveyer 75 may feed a signature from one or both or neither of its hoppers according to a selection programme. For transfer to the conveyer SD, a folded sheet from a conveyer 75 is engaged at its folded end by a gripper 212, Fig. 5, on a cylinder 211, released to a backstop RG, transferred to a gripper 214 on a cylinder 213, which grips a free end, while a finger 217 on a cylinder 216 opens the sheet and releases it on to the saddle conveyer SD.
