1407009 Colour formers LAMSON INDUSTRIES Ltd 27 Nov 1972 [22 Oct 1971] 54683/72 Heading C4P [Also in Division D2] Colour formers for use in hectographic copying processes have the general formula wherein A and B are each optionally substituted 1,4-arylene radicals, each of R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> is an optionally substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl radical or forms part of a divalent organic chain which with the attached nitrogen atom forms a heterocyclic ring, X is an optionally substituted hydrocarbon radical which may contain one or more hetero atoms, Y is an ionic group e.g. a sulpho, sulphuto or carboxy group or OH and n is 1,2 or 3. Preferred compounds are in the form of the Group IA or 11A metal, ammonium, optionally substituted hydrazine, optionally substituted hydroxylamine, optionally substituted guanidine or heterocyclic base salts. They are prepared by reacting a compound of the general formula with a compound X-SO 2 H wherein V is oxygen or sulphur, W is H or alkyl, the reactants containing nY groups which do not take part in the reaction, and R<SP>1</SP>-R<SP>4</SP>, A, B and X are as defined above.
