Abstract
1406925 Radio signalling SENSORMATIC ELECTRONICS CORP 4 May 1973 [9 Aug 1972] 21434/73 Heading H4L [Also in Division G4] A surveillance system for detecting the presence in a controlled space of a signal receptor-re-radiator with a mixing capability, e.g. a tag containing a diode-dipole attached to a valuable item, comprises a microwave source arrangement 10-18 for establishing a first electromagnetic field, a source of lower frequency 35 for establishing a second field substantially electrostatic in nature, via a conductor 37, a detector 22 for detecting the presence of the modulation products of the two signal frequencies in the controlled space. In operation, the source 35 in response to pulses from a modulation source 31 produces bursts of oscillation which mix with the microwave signals in the presence of a tag within the controlled space to produce modulation components from which the low frequency signal is recovered at 22. The envelope of the detected signal corresponding to the original modulation signal from source 31 is obtained by an AM detector 25 and used along with a signal from source 31 to activate an alarm 43 via a counter 39. If only a spurious signal is present or if the tag is removed from the controlled space, the counter 39 is reset before the complete count of 39 and alarm is not raised. In the alternative embodiment of Fig. 4 (not shown), the lower frequency source is frequency modulated by the modulating signal and consequently an FM detector is used in place of the AM detector.
