Abstract

1406742 Coated articles BASF FARBEN & FASERN AG 7 Feb 1973 [19 June 1972] 6044/73 Heading B2E [Also in Division C3] A cured coating with a high binding power is prepared by applying to a substrate a coating of a polyester paste filler composition including a curing catalyst and a filler of low binding power, the composition being transparent to ultra-violet radiation and containing a photo-sensitiser, an unsaturated polyester resin and a copolymerisable monomer, the ratio 'by weight of the unsaturated polyester to copolymerisable monomer being between 10:4.3 and 10:40 and curing the polyester paste filler composition by means of ultra-violet radiation, 0 to 95% by weight of the copolymerisable monomer being replaced by a plasticizer and/or a non-reactive solvent for polyester resins. The expression 'high binding power' refers to a material having complete opacity to visible light and the expression 'low binding power' refers to a material having a refractive index not exceeding 1.70. In the Examples compositions comprising unsaturated polyester resins prepared from 1, 2- propylene glycol, maleic anhydride and phthalic anhydride, hydroquinone, styrene, benzoin isopropyl ether, cellulose acetobutyrate solution in a mixture of alcohol and styrene, blanc fixe, zinc stearate, calcium carbonate, vinyl toluene, glycol monoethyl ether, micro-talc, copolymer of vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, Jura chalk and fast brown dyestuff are coated onto chipboard sheets and cured by exposure to mercury vapour high pressure lamps.
