Abstract

1406575 Image analyzing MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 31 Oct 1973 [1 Nov 1972] 50643/73 Heading G1A [Also in Division G4] A line scanning image analyzing system employs a shift register to store intercepts for one line period, the shift register being driven by a clock pulse generator which is triggered to deliver a selected number of clock pulses on receipt of a synchronizing pulse at the beginning of each line scan; in known fashion the stored signals are compared with current signals one line period later and a counter is incremented only once for each particle in the image. The image field is advanced by a motor 27 and scanned by an oscillating mirror 93 co-operating with a photo-detector 15. The signals from 15 are amplified, squared up and subjected to threshold circuits at 17, 18; the resulting pulses are increased in length and then applied to the shift register 35 and direct to an anti-coincidence circuit 48 to which is also applied the output of the shift register. At the beginning of each scan of mirror 93 a bi-stable 33 is set to release an oscillator 31 which applies stepping pulses to the register 35; when it has delivered a number of pulses equal to the number of stages of the register 35 the oscillator is inhibited by resetting of bi-stable 33. The oscillator is adjustable so the last pulse is applied to the register before the end of the scan. A bi-stable 51 is set by the leading edge of the intercept pulse from 19 and reset by the delayed pulse from the shift register. If it is not reset, indicating a new particle, a pulse generated at the trailing edge of the intercept pulse increments a counter 60. To ensure that particles of greatly varying density are counted only once the thresholds 17, 18 are lowered by a feedback circuit 20 once a particle has been identified. Since the scan is sinusoidal and therefore non-linear a compensating control is applied to the threshold circuit 18 by the mioror drive 22. Full logic circuitry is described, Figs. 4, 5, 6 (not shown).
