Abstract

1406457 Packages with weakened seams OSCAR MAYER & CO Inc 4 Sept 1972 [7 Feb 1972] 40883/72 Heading B8C [Also in Division B5] Meat slices 14 are enclosed between two sheets 12 and 13 hermetically sealed together by a separable seal formed between a polyvinylidene chloride-polyvinyl chloride copolymer layer 17 of the first sheet 12 and a polar monomerethylene copolymer layer 18 on the second sheet 13, which also has a metallic foil layer 19. The polar monomer of layer 18 may be vinyl acetate, isobutyl acrylate, or ethyl acrylate. The second sheet also includes a paperboard layer 20, whilst the first sheet may also include a layer 16 of, e.g. polyvinyl chloride or an ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer. The first sheet 12 may also include an outer layer (25, Fig. 5) of an oxygen barrier material such as polyvinylidene chloride-vinyl chloride copolymer. An insert 21 of non-bonding material is placed between areas of the layers 17, 18 to provide a tab to facilitate separation of the layers 17, 18. Apparatus for forming the packages includes three extruders 33-35 which extrude sheets 33a-35a (corresponding to the layers 17, 18 and 25) into a supercooling bath 36. The sheets 34a, 35a are laminated together by rollers 47, 48 in the bath 36 and the sheet 33a is laminated to a sheet 43 of metal foil coated paper by rollers 44, 45. The package is formed in a unit 37 and the packages passed under a heater 38, which crystallizes the sheet 34a, to a unit 39 at which the packages are separated, excess material 53 being collected on a roll 54. In a modification (Fig. 7) an extruder (56) extrudes a sheet (56a) which is laminated between the sheets 34a, 35a.
