Abstract
1405468 Vehicle safety harness REGIE NATIONALE DES USINES RENAULT and AUTOMOBILES PEUGEOT 5 Sept 1972 [23 Sept 1971] 4119/72 Heading A3V A vehicle safety harness comprises a strap 11 anchored at two vertically spaced inboard points 17, 18 of which at least one is adjustable in height and a member 12, slidable along the strap 11, is connected to a traction element 14 which passes through a guide member 15 slidable along a fixed slideway 16 on the associated vehicle door and is provided with a winding device 13 so that the harness is automatically displaced between an operative and an inoperative position as the vehicle door is opened and closed. The movement of the guide member 15 along the slideway 16 may be facilitated by a tension spring connected between the members 12 and 15 or by passing the free end of element 14 back through the member 12 to an anchor point on the member 15. Alternatively an auxiliary traction element connected to the guide member 15 may be wound on an auxiliary winding device in the opposite direction to the element 14. The guide member may carry a pinion driven by the traction element 14 and meshing with a rack on the slideway. Fig. 7 shows a guide member in the form of a carriage 45 which is driven along the slideway 16 by a screw-threaded shaft 50 driven by an electric motor M. The upper anchoring point 18 may be lowered automatically to fit a wearer's anatomy when the engine is started by a piston-cylinder unit communicating with the vehicle's induction manifold and a spring returns the point upwards when the ignition is switched off. The safety harness may incorporate energy-absorbing devices and length-adjusting buckles or retractors.
