Abstract

1329808 Motor vehicle seat belts with automatic displacing and locking mechanism FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 13 March 1972 [17 March 1971] 11589/72 Heading A3V A motor vehicle is equipped with seat-belts of the lap and diagonal type having at least one automatic reel and anchored at upper and lower inboard points while the outboard anchorage is provided by a lock section 16 fixed to the vehicle body and a movable lock section 9 carried by the belt, the section 9 being mounted on a slider 11 displaceable in either direction along an axially slotted tube 12 by a flexible cable 13 and a reversible electric motor 14 so as to move the seat belt between its protective position and a position to allow a passenger to enter the vehicle. The slotted tube. 12 and motor 14 are accommodated in a side trim panel and a guide tube 15 receives the free end portion of the cable 13 beyond the motor. A U-shaped groove in the vehicle, panel may be used as the guide tube 15. The lock section 9 is so attached to the slider 11 as to be released from the latter on the application of a certain load to transmit the forces to the vehicle body and the fixed lock section may alternatively be located on the door at 16' in which case a force transmitting connection between the door and the vehicle frame is provided. In the case of the rear seat belts, each slotted tube extends up the associated door pillar and across the roof with the guide tube of the other rear seat belt disposed alongside and a single motor 14 is used selectively to drive each flexible cable independently. Conveniently the slotted tubes, guide tubes and motor are all formed in an inverted U-shaped trim unit which is attached to the vehicle above the normal trim. An additional belt displacement device may be provided to displace the upper inboard end of the seat belts simultaneously with the above described mechanism. The motor 14 is automatically started by opening or closing a door of the vehicle, tipping a front seat back rest in the case of the rear seat belts in a two door vehicle or by switches in the seats themselves.
