Abstract
1405230 Candles J CANGARDEL 28 Dec 1973 [8 March 1973] 60024/73 Heading C5W A candle which burns with a coloured flame comprises a central rod of pure metaldehyde embedded in a body of stearin or stearin acid 5-15% by vol. of a metal stearate to give the desired colour. Green, red and yellow flames are given by Cu, Li and Na stearates respectively, and a blue flame from the metaldehyde in the absence of stearate; composite colours can be obtained by mixing stearates. The illustrated candle has a central square metaldehyde rod 1 embedded in body 2. To ensure uniform burning a cup-like member 3 is provided at the top of the candle, the member comprising conical downwardly sloping collar 4, whose outer edge 5 may extend 1-2 mm. beyond the periphery of the candle, and central cylindrical sleeve 6 which can slide and be guided along vertical edges 7 of rod 1. Member 3 may be of copper, brass or aluminium. Thus member 3, when heated by flame 8, melts and penetrates into body 2 and in each of spaces 9 between a surface of rod 1 and collar 6 the mixture of melting stearate accumulates in contact with rod 9 is vaporized by the base of flame 8. At the same time sleeve 6 is guided on the vertical edges 7 of rod 1, the melting-point of which is 380 C. Thus rod 1 is always solid adjacent sleeve 6 and member 3 is guided by the rod so that edge 5 of 3 is always horizontal.
