Abstract

1405214 Pot filling apparatus N E HICKERSQN 13 Aug 1973 38275/73 Heading A1E [Also in Division B8] A potting apparatus comprises a main horizontal conveyor belt 11 which carries pots 14 to a filling station. A second conveyor 23 is located above the main conveyor 11 and directly below a hopper 22 containing soil 28 the height of which inside the hopper determines the rate of flow of the soil and is controlled by a switch 27 which controls the drive of a conveyor 30 which carries soil to the hopper 26. A scraper bar 36 removes soil from belt 23 and scrapes excess soil from the top of each pot to a pre-determined level. The belt 23 is height adjustable by means of a jack 38 and moves at substantially the same speed as belt 11 so that pots 14 pass between the two belts and the soil is compacted by the bottom run 37 of the belt 23. Guides 44 take the pots 14 across a narrow bridge which allows spilled soil to fall into casing 48 from whence it is conveyed on belt 54 back into hopper 26. As each pot 14 passes over bridge 47 it is taken up by a conveyor belt 57. Each pot 14 is engaged by guides 61 and has a hole punched in the soil therein by an adjustable punch 67 operated by a motor 63 and actuated by switch 62 which itself is actuated by the pot. After punching, the pot 14 is moved along by conveyor 57 to have cuttings, seedlings or the like planted therein.
