Abstract

1405172 Fishing apparatus WHITE FISH AUTHORITY 15 Feb 1973 [23 Feb 1972] 8383/72 Heading A1A [Also in Divisions B8 and F1] A fishing apparatus consists of a hydraulic motor 1 driving a reel 2 via a shaft 3 which also carries a short worm thread 59 used to reverse the direction of the motor 1 after a certain number of revolutions in order to provide a jigging action to the line carried by the reel 2. When jigging with the apparatus, the follower 46 causes a lever 45 to swing until it makes contact with the edge of a tapered slot 43 in a sleeve 37. Further movement of the lever 45 causes rotation of the sleeve 37 and also of a sleeve 35 which is connected to the sleeve 37 by a screw 39. The sleeve 33 is connected directly to a two position hydraulic control valve 17 so that after a certain angle of swing of the lever 45, the two position hydraulic control valve 17 reverses and operates a pilot operated valve 28 which in turn causes reversal of the hydraulic motor 1. The swing of the lever 45 required to cause reversal can be adjusted by varying the amount of lost motion by means of a screw 39. This causes the sleeve 37 to slide along the sleeve 33 and to present a wider or narrower part of the tapered slot 43 to the lever 45. Adjustment of the screw then determines the angle through which the motor 1 and the reel 2 rotate before reversal takes place. Outward movement of a lever 50 into the second detent position set by a steel ball 55 and a spring 56 disengages a follower 47 from a worm 59 and also moves the lever 45 into a parallel part 42, of the tapered slot thus removing the lost motion. Rotation of the lever 50 then operates the two position hydraulic control valve directly and enables reeling in or cut under power. The entire mechanism is contained within a sealed box 11 with provision for attachment to the gunwhale of a boat and also for mounting a pulley to guide the line. Splash lubrication is provided by a paddle 60. Fluid pressure is supplied by an external source via a control valve, the source having a characteristic which gives a decreased speed when a catch of fish increases the load on the line.
