Abstract

1405108 Microcapsules AGFA-GEVAERT 11 Dec 1972 [23 Dec 1971] 59995/71 Heading B8C Microcapsules are prepared by emulsifying an aqueous fill material in a solution of a waterinsoluble film-forming material in a waterimmiscible solvent and rapidly adding further aqueous material so as to form a water (oil) water type emulsion, the quantities of liquids being chosen so that the volume of the first aqueous phase is not greater than that corresponding to the 1st insertion point of the system and the volumes of the first and second aqueous phases together are substantially equal to or higher than that corresponding to the second inversion point of the system. Thereafter the solvent is removed by evaporation (usually with continuous stirring), thereby forming the miorocapsules, which may be hardened &c. in conventional manner. Numerous suitable film-forming materials are mentioned which are addition polymers and copolymers, condensation polymers or modified natural polymers, e.g. vinyl polymers, acrylics, polyamides, polyesters, polycarbonates, poly-sulphonates, polyphosphonates, polyurethanes and cellulose derivatives. The core material may likewise be selected from a wide field of substances which are conventionally microencapsulated, particular reference being made to photographic chemicals such as gelatin silver halides, dyes, colour formers, colour reactants, development activators and retarders and bleaches. The aqueous phases may be the same or different, and the viscosity of the first aqueous phase may be increased by addition of suitable materials.
