Abstract

1405048 Calculators SHARP K K 5 Oct 1973 [6 Oct 1972 24 April 1973] 46712/73 Heading G4A [Also in Division B6] A calculator comprises a keyboard (4, Fig. 1, not shown) and a display unit (2) each including a plurality of sets of electrodes some of which are formed, together with a computation unit (3), directly on a common substrate (1). As described the substrate 1 which is made of dielectric material is encased in a plastics housing (5) with a hood (8) covering the display area, a power supply to the calculator being- switched on when the hood is opened. Keyboard.-The keyboard comprises a plurality of pairs of comb shaped electrodes 31 (Fig. 3) (one for each key) formed on one surface B of substrate 1 (made of for example glass, ceramics or plastics). A rubber plate 45 is adhered to the surface B except at dome shaped projections 46<SP>1</SP> which overlie the electrodes 31 (Fig. 5, not shown). The plate 45 is covered by a reinforcing plate 49 and spring plate 48, the legs of keys 50 projecting through central holes in the spring plate so that when a key is actuated the associated projection 46<SP>1</SP> is depressed to shunt the pair of electrodes 31 associated with the keys. When the key is released it returns under snap action to its original position. Power is supplied to the keyboard from a board 39 making contact with terminals 33 via conductor pins 41. A multipin connector 36 couples signals from the keyboard via terminal 32 to computation unit 3 formed on the opposite side of the substrate. Display and computation unit.-On one surface (A, Fig. 2, not shown) of the substrate 1 is formed a liquid crystal display unit and a semiconductor computation unit. The display comprises electrodes (12) consisting of transparent conductive film on the substrate with electrode leads, a glass plate (21) having reflective electrodes (22) is separated from the substrate by a spacer so that a cavity for the liquid crystal composition is formed. Multilayer connections (51) are made between the display and circuit units, the latter comprising large scale integrated circuit elements (25, 25<SP>1</SP>) having signal leads (28) coated with solder for connection to previously plated solder layers (27) on the substrate 1. Fig. 6 (not shown) illustrates the procedure for making the calculator.
