Abstract
1403842 Treating refuse ARBMAN DEVELOPMENT AB 15 May 1973 [17 May 1972] 23073/73 Headings C1K and C1J Refuse, e.g. garbage and/or sludge, is treated by burning the combustibles present therein, e.g. in furnace 4, washing the combustion gases and neutralizing the impurities therein with lime, e.g. in scrubber 24, to form a calcium sulphate sludge, mixing this sludge with the ash formed and other slag products if any of the combustion to form a raw material which is then sintered (e.g. in furnace 12) to form an insoluble ceramic end product. The combustion gases after the washing and neutralization are returned to the atmosphere as water vapour and CO 2 . The ash particles may be separated off from the combustion gases, e.g. in a cyclone 8, and added to the raw material. A dewatering step prior to combustion may be included. In the examples, after the combustion ash, gypsum sludge, and other slag products if any are shaped, e.g. into balls or cakes or strip like shapes, and sintered and in the case of the last two shapes are subsequently fragmented. Mixtures of ash and gypsum sludge together sometimes with clay or silica sand are described.
