Abstract
1403582 Coated vinyl chloride polymer sheets W R GRACE & CO 4 April 1973 [10 April 1972] 16516/72 Heading B2E A process for treating a film of unplasticised vinyl chloride polymer comprises forming on one surface of the film a coating of a thermoplastic resin having good heat-sealing properties and having an antistatic agent dissolved or dispersed therein and then contacting the coating with the uncoated surface of another film, or of a different part of the same film which has been similarly coated on the opposite side, the antistatic agent and the conditions of said contacting being such that part of the antistatic agent migrates from the coating to the uncoated surface. The film is of vinyl chloride homopolymer of a copolymer of vinyl chloride containing at least 80% by weight of vinyl chloride. The resin and the antistatic agent need to ;be selected so that sufficient transfer of the antistatic agent takes place from the coated to the uncoated side of the film. The resin and the antistatic agent may be completely dissolved in the solution, the solvent being preferably a mixture of a low boiling solvent and a minor proportion of a retardant or high boiling solvent. Alternatively, the resin and the antistatic agent may be applied in the form of and aqueous emulsion. Suitable thermoplastic resins are copolymers containing at least 40% by weight of vinylidene chloride, the other monomer or monomers being vinyl chloride, (C 1 -C 8 ) alkyl acrylates or methacrylates, acrylonitrile and acrylic, methacrylic or itaconic acid, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers containing at least 10% by weight of vinyl acetate, and also containing acrylic, methacrylic or itaconic acid, or poly(C 1 -C 8 ) alkyl acrylates or methacrylates and mixtures of these. Numerous suitable antistatic agents are specified. Suitable polymers for the films are copolymers of vinyl chloride with, vinyl acetate, cetyl vinylether, propylene or ethylene. Various inorganic compounds such as phosphoric acid, lithium chloride, potassium acetate and magnesium chloride may be present in the coating to enhance the antistatic properties thereof at low relative humidities.
