Abstract
1403479 Automatic Control of Position INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 19 Dec 1973 [27 Dec 1972 (2)] 58795/73 Heading G3N [Also in Division H2 ] Apparatus for controlling the position of a body, preferably the rotor of a stepping motor, moving into a desired position comprise, first and second driving means for supplying driving energy to the body in first and opposite directions respectively, means for initiating operation of the second driving means when the body has moved through the desired position in the first direction, means for subsequently initiating operation of the first driving means when the body is returning towards the desired position in the opposite direction, and means, for subsequently interrupting the operation of the second driving means before the body reaches the desired position. The control is generally digital and the desired position is loaded into a register for comparison with the count stored in a counter fed with pulses produced by a device indicative of rotation of the rotor. These pulses together with a pulse emitted when desired and actual positions coincide control operation of the apparatus. An overshot counter is enabled for the the rotor has passed the desired position for the first time and counts the emitted pulses with regard to the direction of movement of the rotor. A divide-by-two counter also counts the same input pulses as the overshoot counter and the two counts are compared, switch pulses being produced when equality is achieved. The switch pulse causes initiation of the first driving means and by this arrangement this initiation takes place when the rotor is approximately half-way between the desired position and its furthest from the desired position. Furthermore, the second driving means is not interrupted until the rotor has moved one movement further back towards the desired position. A fine positioning system is activated when the rotor moves through the desired position for the second time whereby an analog controller supplies the driving means with voltage dependent upon the distance from the desired position.
