Abstract

In a control system, e.g. for a machine tool, pulses generated by a unit 7 (Fig. 2) as the work table moves, are compared in a counter 3 with the required position of the table, pulses received after the driving motor has received a stop signal being counted and if a predetermined number of such pulses are received an alarm signal is given. The motor 5 is controlled during normal working conditions by a voltage from a voltage divider 13. When the table nears its required position a contact 16 is moved under the control of the counter 3 so that the motor 5 is driven more slowly at a speed determined by the setting of a uniselector 15 until a further contact 17 is operated when the required position of the table has been reached. The uniselector 15 is controlled in accordance with the position of a uniselector 11, the setting of which determines the amount by which the table may overshoot the required position before an alarm signal is generated by the member 12. In a modification, the motor 5 is driven at a constant speed, but the speed at which the table moves is determined by a gear-box having magnetic clutches controlled by uniselector. In a further embodiment (Fig. 4), the counter 3 has a plurality of outputs 25 sequentially energized as the table nears its required position, one of the outputs controlling a contact 27 via selection means 26 so that the table is driven at a slower speed.
