1403374 Welding by fusion GKN SANKEY Ltd 22 May 1973 [11 May 1972] 22002/72 Addition to 1326095 Heading B3R [Also in Division B7] In welding together a one-piece rim and a onepiece supporting disc of a motor vehicle wheel, wherein the rim comprises tyre-bead seats separated by a well, a first tyre retaining flange and at least part of a second tyre retaining flange, welding is effected by a fusion process, such as gas, electric-arc and electron and laser beam, in the region of said second flange and during welding the rim and the disc are mutually radially located by overlapping surfaces thereof or by a separate ring, e.g. copper, overlapping both the rim and the disc. As shown a disc 18 has a locating spigot 24 providing a backing ring for an external butt weld 25. An internal fillet weld 26 is concavely surfaced for stress concentration control. The welds may be effected simultaneously with the disc and rim held in a jig and rotated with the wheel axis 16 horizontal and the welds 25, 26 effected respectively at positions above and below said axis. After welding, the external surface 27 may be machined or ground to remove flash. In Fig. 3 (not shown) the internal fillet weld is omitted and the spigot (40) is removed by machining or grinding. In Fig. 4 (not shown, an embodiment similar to Fig. 3 (not shown), the butt weld is internal. In Fig. 2 (not shown )the rim overlaps the disc and the welding comprises two concave fillets. In Fig. 5 (not shown) the rim overlaps the edge of the disc and the welding comprises two fillets.
