Abstract
1403214 Telomers; curing epoxy resins HOECHST AG 24 July 1972 [24 July 1971] 34520/72 Headings C3P and C3B A telomer is prepared by copolymerizing (a) a fraction with a boiling point range of from 120‹ to 220‹ C. being a mixture of at least one saturated and at least two olefinically unsaturated aromatic hydrocarbons with (b) an olefinically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or acid anhydride in the presence of a telogen and a radical catalyst, after the polymerization the telomer being separated from the unreacted starting materials as such or after neutralization or esterification. In the examples various hydrocarbon fractions are copolymerized with maleic anhydride in the presence of xylene, di-tert-butyl peroxidedicumyl peroxide, 2,5-dimethyl 2,5-bis-(tertiarybutylperoxy)-hexane and -hexene, cumene, dodecyl mercaptan, α,α<SP>1</SP>-diisobutyronitrile and toluene. The unreacted starting materials are distilled off and may be recycled. The telomer may be converted to the sodium salt with caustic soda, treated with diethylenetetramine to give an imide which is not cross-linked, or treated with an alcohol, e.g. isobutanol to give the semiester which may be further reacted with aqueous ammonia to give the ammonium salt. The uncrosslinked imide of Example 3 may be used as a curing agent for epoxy resins.
