Rotary batch mixers; stationary batch mixers with rotary stirrers -A mixing or agitating machine for use in making ice-cream or like confectionery comprises a vat to contain freezing- mixture and adapted to receive a rotary container which has stationary paddles within it preferably connected to the detachable lid of the container. The vat 25 is mounted on a platform 22 vertically adjustable in guides 23 by means of a handle 24 so that the driving-spindle of the container 26 c'an be lifted into or out of gear with an operating-head 20 which is mounted on a spindle driven by bevel-gearing from a sleeve 17 driven through a clutch 15 from the driving-sbaft 4. The container 26 has a concave base to receive the square end 27 of the spindle 21 which has a bearing in a plate 28 on the base of the vat 25. The cover 29 of the container has an inspection opening 30 with a handle 31, and the beater or stirring-device consists of a paddle 32 secured to the cover 29 and having at its lower end curved parts 33 to suit the concave base of the container. By undoing the wing-nuts 36, the brackets 34 on the vat 25 can be moved and the paddles removed from the container. To prevent the container from rising when the paddles are removed, a cage 38 is secured by nuts 39 to the vat 25 and connected to the container by means of a ball or like antifriction thrust-ring 40. The shaft 4 can be coupled by a clutch 6 to a sleeve carrying a friction disk 7 which drives an adjustable friction disk 8 on a spindle 9 carrying a socket 10 to receive an egg-beating whisk or other tool for acting on material in a container placed on the vertically adjustable platform 12.
