Abstract

1402963 Making carrier bags BRITISH CELLOPHANE Ltd 15 Feb 1974 [16 Feb 1973] 7800/73 Heading A4G [Also in Division B5] A seamless tubular film of a synthetic thermoplastic material, especially polyethylene polypropylene or poly(vinyl chloride), having at least one band of quarter thickness than the remainder of the wall of the film is formed by extrusion through an annular orifice to form a tube, inflating the tube by a gas under pressure and contacting at least one cooled lubricated roller with a portion of the molten tube rotating said roller in such a direction that at the area of contact the roller surface is moving in a direction opposite to the movement of the tube so as to solidify that portion and inhibit further thinning relative to other circumferential portions of the tube and cooling the tube. In Figs. 1 and 2, tube 3 is extruded through a die 2, collapsed by a pair of driven nip rollers 4 and air under pressure is admitted by pipe 5 to give a tube of predetermined diameter. The circumferential zone of solidification is indicated at 6 and the height of such line is determined by the position of the cooling ring 7. Between the frost line 6 and the ring 7 is positioned a rotatable bias roller 8 having a width corresponding to the width of a thickened band required to be formed in tube 3 and caused to rotate in contact with the tube. A stream of cooling liquid especially water, is directed on to the roller 8 and excess liquid collected in a trough 10. A thickened strip 12 is formed. In evaporating the lubricant assists the cooling of the tube 3. In Fig. 5 a modification is shown using two rollers 21 and 22 to give a tube as shown in Fig. 6. Fig. 4 shows a single roller which may be used in place of two side by side rollers 70 so as to give a crease line when the tube is collapsed. A laminate is formed by collapsing the tube (especially as shown in Fig. 6) followed by hot calendering. Carrier bags are formed by collapsing the tube 3 (now tubular film 1) in Figs. 1 and 2 by the nip rollers 4 at such a position that a crease line passes centrally through the band 12 slitting through the crease line (Fig.3) at the band 12 with a knife 15, forming transverse seals 16, at spaced intervals, forming cut-out hand holes 17 in the thickened edges 18 at the mouth of the bags 14 and then cutting off individual bags by cutting centrally through the seals 16.
