Abstract
1402904 Thermal insulation; tubes KERNFORSCHUNG mbH GES FUR 22 Sept 1972 [1 Oct 1971] 43914/72 Headings F2P and F2X [Also in Division G6] A thermal insulating jacket for heat-sensitive elements subject to temperature variations such as elongated structural elements in the core of a sodium-cooled nuclear reactor, e.g. control rod guide tubes, container walls, tubes &c., consists of a bandage which contains one or more intermediate layers 2, each layer 2 comprising two parallel metal sheets 3, 4 interconnected at weld seams 7 to provide a plurality of separate chambers 6 filled with gas, e.g. argon, and each chamber 6 containing a plaited wire mesh 5. The bandage is helically wound about the structural element 1 to be insulated and is provided with an outer protective band 8 wound on the intermediate layers 2. The intermediate layers 2 when superimposed in several plies are so wound that the butt edges of two adjacent plies or ply sections mutually overlap and are covered by the continuous part of a ply formed by the superimposed layer 2. The metal sheets 3, 4, the wire mesh 5, and the protective band 8 are preferably made of the same material as the structural element 1, e.g. austenitic steel in the case of a nuclear reactor component.
