Abstract

1402897 Ultrasonic leak detecting G A HARRIS 31 Aug 1972 [31 Aug 1971] 40433/72 Heading H4D A method of fault finding in hollow tubes extending through an enclosure in a condenser, comprises generating ultrasonic energy in the enclosure and scanning the open tube ends with an ultrasonic detector. In testing the condenser of a stream turbine, ultrasonic generator 18 situated above, between and to the sides of the banks of condenser tubes 11 are energized. The inlet and outlet chambers 12, 13 for the cooling fluid are emptied and operators 20 scan the open tube ends using a microphone and detector 19. Any tube which yields a high sound intensity is flawed and is subsequently sealed by a cork to enable testing to continue. Higher intensity ultrasonic energy is used to vibrate weak spots in the condenser enabling detection thereof. The generators 18 comprise piezoelectric transducers and transistor oscillators mounted inside wire mesh boxes provided with electric power supply cables (Figs. 4-5, not shown). Instead of fixed generators 18, portable generators may be used.
