Abstract

1402834 Process for producing UO 2 AGIP NUCLEARE SpA 4 Dec 1973 [14 Dec 1972] 56206/73 Heading C1A Pellets of UO 2 are prepared from pellets of a uranium compound capable, upon calcination, of conversion to the desired oxide, which process comprises subjecting the dry pellets of the uranium compound to the following steps, in an atmosphere constituted by a mixture of an inert gas (e.g. Argon) and up to 4% hydrogen: (a) heating at a rate of 300-400‹ C./hr. to a temperature of at least 1000‹ C.; (b) maintaining the temperature thus for 1-2 hrs.; (c) cooling at a rate of 300-400‹ C./hr. to between 700-1000‹ C.; (d) cooling further in a controlled but not necessarily similar manner to (c).
