1402733 Producing shaped plastics articles NITTO BOSEKI CO Ltd and JAPAN ATOMIC ENERGY RESEARCH INSTITUTE 14 Nov 1972 52530/72 Heading C3P A continuous process for producing shaped articles of fibre-reinforced plastics material comprises passing through a forming device a moulding material comprising a radiationcurable synthetic resin material, which is curable by a free radical cross linking mechanism, and a reinforcing fibrous material, and exposing the moulding material to ionizing radiation immediately after it leaves the forming device, while pulling out the thus shaped material by means of a pair of rollers. In a modification of the process, the surface of the moulding material is covered with a 25 to 200 Á thick film which is transparent to the radiation used, and the thickness or volume of the material is then adjusted as desired before the material is formed and cured. The curable resin material may be, for example, an unsaturated polyester, an acrylic resin (saturated or unsaturated), a diallylphthalate resin, polybutadiene, modified polybutadiene, or an epoxy or polyurethane resin which has been modified so as to introduce unsaturated groups therein. The reinforcing material may be a natural or synthetic organic fibrous material or an inorganic fibrous material, preferred examples of these being glass fibre, asbestos, polyester fibre and polyvinyl alcohol fibre. The moulding material may also include a filler and other additives such as colouring agents, mould release agents, thickening agents, curing catalysts and promoters, UV stabilizers and flame retardants. Useful forms of ionizing radiation include α-, #- and γ-rays, X-rays, and accelerated electron beams. The articles formed may have such shapes as plain flat panels, embossed panels, rods, rectangular bars, L-shaped bars and panels which are corrugated longitudinally or transversely.
