Abstract

1402418 Elastomer-based adhesives ANCHOR CHEMICAL CO Ltd 21 Sept 1972 [19 Oct 1971] 48483/71 Headings C3E C3P and C3Q A bonding agent for use in rubber-to-metal bonding comprises at least one halogenated elastomer dissolved in an organic solvent and at least one cross-linking additive, the halogenated elastomers being selected from (1) post-halogenated copolymers of isoprene (2) post-halogenated polymers or copolymers of butadiene (3) copolymers of 2-chlorobutadiene and posthalogenated polymers and copolymers thereof, (4) polymers and copolymers of 1,4- or 2,3 dichlorobutadiene which may be post-halogenated, (5) halo-butyl elastomers, (b) polymers obtained by addition of a di-halo carbene to an unsaturated elastomer and (7) chlorosulphonated polyethylene and the cross-linking additives being selected from dithiocarbamates of the general formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are alkyl cycloalkyl aryl or aralkyl groups or may together with the nitrogen form a heterocyclic ring M is a metal and x and y are integers from 1 to 5, and thiuram sulphides of the general formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> R<SP>2</SP> R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are alkyl, cycloalkyl aryl or aralkyl groups or R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> and/or R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> together with the adjacent nitrogen may form a heterocyclic ring and X is an integer from 1 to 4. Preferably halogenated natural rubber is used in conjunction with the above halogenated elastomers. Examples describe compositions containing (a) chlorinated natural rubber (b) dichlorobutadiene - α - bromoacrylonitrile copolymer, post-chlorinated or post-brominated polychloroprene or chlorinated SBR rubber, (c) carbon black or hydrocarbon wax and a pigment, (d) zinc cobalt or nickel dibutyl dithiocarbamate, a zinc dibutyldithiocarbamatedibutylamine complex, zinc dimethyl, ethyl phenyl or morpholino dithiocarbamate, tetramethylthiuram mono- or di-sulphide or bis- (pentamethylene thiuram)tetrasulphide and (e) as solvent xylene, n-butylacetate or a mixture thereof.
