Abstract

1402223 Radio navigation MITSUI SHIPBUILDING & ENG CO Ltd 20 June 1973 [26 June 1972] 29315/73 Heading H4D A ship guiding system comprises a land millimetre-wave radar system having an aerial 1, apparatus 2, and a cathode-ray tube 11. The radar may operate at 35 GHz (7À7 mm. wavelength), and the display on the screen of the CRT is of PPI type. A hydrographic chart of the area in which the ship is navigating is superimposed upon the PPI display, for example, by means a representation of said chart upon a transparent plate of glass (Fig. 2, not shown), and a video signal representing the composite picture is produced from a television camera 12 having a drive signal generator 13. A distributor 14 which is coupled to the camera 12 supplies video monitors 15, 18 and a 900 MHz television transmitter 4, with an aerial 5. The monitor 18, being at a remote location is supplied through a coaxial cable 21 and an amplifier 17. An aerial 6 and receiving apparatus 7 are provided on the ship, and the composite picture is displayed on video monitors 16, 20, the latter being supplied through a coaxial cable 22 and an amplifier 19. The system may be simplified by omitting the additional monitors at the ship and/or the land station (Figs. 1, 3, not shown).
