1401955 Pneumatic tyre and wheel rim assemblies DUNLOP Ltd 9 Aug 1972 [11 Aug 1971 2 Oct 1971] 37680/71 and 45940/71 Addition to 1359461 Heading B7C A pneumatic tyre and wheel rim assembly comprises a tubeless tyre mounted on a rim having annular bead retaining flanges and a well 1 therebetween, and at least one container having a rigid shell secured in the well so as to project radially outwardly between the tyre beads to prevent displacement of the beads into the well, the or each container being arranged to contain lubricating fluid and to release the fluid into the inflation chamber of the assembly on tyre deflection so as to lubricate the tyre interior surfaces thereby reducing frictionally generated heat and enabling continued running of the deflated tyre. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, four containers are provided in equally circumferentially spaced positions around the well 1, the metal or plastics shell 2 of each container being open-topped and containing a sealed sachet 7 of lubricating fluid 9 which projects beyond the rim of the shell such that in use it can be contacted by the tyre interior surfaces on tyre deflation and ruptured thereby. Each satchet 7 may alternatively have a plunger associated therewith operable to rupture the satchet by pressure change in the tyre or mechanical engagement with the tyre. Each shell 2 is secured in the well 1 by a nut 5 screwed on to a hollow spigot 3 which projects from the shell base and extends through a hole in the base of the well, an O-ring 4 being clamped between the shell 2 and well 1 to seal the hole in the well base. The spigot 3 of each shell receives a projection 8 of the associated satchet 7 which is anchored in the spigot by adhesive and/or mechanical engagement. A cord 11 with a toggle 12 thereon may be provided on each projection 8 to assist in pulling the associated spigot 3 through its hole in the well during mounting of the containers on the rim. The embodiment illustrated in Fig. 2 is similar to that shown in Fig. 1 except that in each container the satchet is omitted and the shell is closed by a lid 20 having a substantially conical plunger 21 therein displaceable by the deflated type, to release the lubricating fluid, against the action of a spring (22) (Fig. 3, not shown) in the shell.
