Abstract

1401703 Subbing polyester films KONISHIROKU PHOTO INDUSTRY CO Ltd 23 May 1973 [30 May 1972] 24696/73 Heading B2E [Also in Division G2] Polyester film is subbed by subjecting at least one face of the film to electron bombardment so that the contact angle thereof with water becomes less than 58‹, and then applying to the treated face(s) of the film a dispersion in water or water and an organic liquid of (a) a copolymer of a diolefin with at least one other polymerisable ethylenically unsaturated monomer and (b) a compound having at least two ethyleneimino and/or methyl sulphonyloxy groups. The coated film may be further coated with Ag 2 Brl, Ag 2 BrCl- or gelatin photographic emulsions or a styrene-maleic anhydride copolymer in which the maleic anhydride unit have the formula: The polyester film is preferably biaxially stretched polyethylene terephthalate. The diolefin may be butadiene, 2-chloroprene, isoprene, neoprene or 2, 3-dimethylbutadiene. Many examples of the other ethylenically unsaturated monomer are given and include many acrylates, methacrylates, (meth) acrylamides, (meth) acrylonitriles, vinyl isocyanate, styrene, substituted styrenes, vinyl methyl or ethyl ether; vinyl esters and chloroesters (including acetate), (meth) acrylic acid, itaconic acid and anhydride, monomethyl ester, or mono ethyl ester, maleic or fumaric monoalkyl or benzyl esters, crotonic acid, or mixtures thereof. The copolymer preferably comprises 25 to 75 wt% diolefin and 0.5 to 30wt% of the copolymerisable monomer which contains a terminal hydroxy, formyl, carboxyl, amido, alkoxy, isocyanato, or ethyleneimino group. The composition may contain hardeners for a subsequently applied gelatinous coating, many examples of such hardeners being given, natural (saponin) or synthetic surfactants, matting agents such as colloidal silica, TiO 2 , ZnO, Al 2 O 3 , polymethyl methacrylate, polystyrene beads or starch powder, or a dye or pigment.
