Abstract

1401627 Automatic exchange systems POST OFFICE 16 Feb 1973 [16 Nov 1971] 53137/71 Heading H4K In a telecommunication switching system in which a plurality of communication paths, e.g. subscriber lines 2, are connected to a switching centre, MSU, Fig. 1 (not shown), via a TDM highway 13, the MSU controls a testing arrangement 6, 19, 15 which applies a test signal to a selected path. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 each subscriber line has its own signalling unit (SU) 6 included in a concentrator 3. The SU is a transistor logic circuit, Fig. 5 (not shown), capable of applying, in response to the control signals, various test voltage conditions to the two wires of the subscriber line. Test results are transmitted to the MSU along the TDM highway. In particular the SU tests the line capacitance and is able by investigating decay characteristics to distinguish between a low insulation fault and a battery or earth contact fault. In a further embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), one SU is provided for each channel of the TDM highway and is connected to a selected subscriber line through an analogue switch. The SU may be arranged, on receiving suitable control signals, to ring a subscriber's bell, or to open the coin-slots on a coin-box line.
