Abstract
1401348 Treating textile filaments J HUTER 19 Oct 1972 [21 Oct 1971] 48129/72 Heading D1F A process for providing textile filaments 11 with directional frictional properties to aid felting, comprises pretensioning the filaments in continuous lengths and then, by means of devices moving relative to the filaments and provided with cutters, scraping edges or grinding granules, the surface of the filament is provided with closely spaced notches or incisions 17, which extend laterally or obliquely to the longitudinal direction of the filament, so that in longitudinal section the filament have saw-tooth-like profiles extending substantially in the same direction, the filaments thereafter being cut to required length. The cutters may be in the form of blades fixed in upper and lower boards which reciprocate in the direction of the filament travel, the upper and lower boards reciprocating in opposite directions. Alternatively the cutters comprise upper and lower rollers 12 provided with cutting edges 13 or emory-paper surfaces. The rotation of the rollers 12 may be continuous or intermittent to vary the spacing of the notches, and the angle of wrap on the rollers is preferably in the range 10‹-45‹. Prior to treatment with the cutters, the filaments may be drawn, or stretched and/or false twisted. Additionally, the filaments are preferably led through a comb prior to treatment to take of the form of a filament band in which the filaments extend parallel to each other.
