Abstract

1400954 Profiled bending rollers; making pipe cladding collars; shearing; punching; generating KITSON'S INSULATION PRODUCTS Ltd 26 July 1973 [1 Nov 1972] 35674/73 Headings B3A B3E B3T and B3W Apparatus for forming a profiled strip of material with bent over edges comprises two co-operating rotatably mounted rollers 1, 2, one of which having at least two projecting ribs 3 and the other having at least two grooves 4 for receiving respective ribs. Respective faces 3b, 4b, Fig. 3, of the ribs and grooves, which lie in elliptical paths, co-operate to give a shearing effect when the rollers are contrarotated. The strip may be of uniform or of varying width and may be given profiles to increase its handling resistance using cooperating pairs of projections and recesses 5, 6, and 7, 8, Fig. 1. The strip may be bent into annular collars for thermal insulating pipe cladding and a flexible tubular member can be formed by joining collars having alternately outwardly and inwardly extending side portions (10), Fig. 4 (not shown). The profiled rollers may be formed by mounting a blank 11 on a shaft 12, Fig. 5, for rotation therewith, the blank having plates 15, 16 mounted either side provided with followers 17, 18 which engage cams 19, 20 upon rotation of the shaft. A stationary cutting tool 23 is used to machine the blank to form the grooves or ribs one at a time. The partly machined blank may be removed from the shaft and replaced thereon in the opposite orientation to machine the other rib or groove in like manner to the first rib or groove.
