Abstract
1400870 Rotary internal-combustion engine DAIMLER-BENZ AG 5 Oct 1972 [7 Oct 1971] 45992/72 Heading F1F A rotary internal-combustion engine comprises a housing having a side wall 1 and a peripheral wall part 2, the peripheral part having an annular groove 5 in which an annular gas seal 6 surrounds an annular liquid seal 7, said seals contacting the face of the side wall 1 and sealingly surrounding a lubrication passage 4 extending through the housing parts. The seals may be located in separate grooves in the same wall part or one groove may be located in one wall part and the other in the other wall part Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown). The gas seal may be located in co-operating grooves in the two wall parts, the liquid seal being held in the peripheral wall Fig. 4 (not shown). The gas seal may alternatively be urged against the side wall by a resilient member in the base of groove in the peripheral wall Figs. 5 to 7 (not shown). The seal 6 may be made of resilient metallic material such as copper and the seal 7 formed by an O-ring of rubber or plastics. In every case the gas seal protects the liquid seal from wear by combustion gases.
