Abstract

1399755 Sterilisation A P V CO LTD 22 Aug 1973 [5 Sept 1972] 41136/72 Heading A2D A plant for the heat treatment (e.g. sterilisation) of particulate solid material in continuous flow, which plant is connected to a receiving (eg. canning) plant, comprises a hot zone and a cooling section and a reversible transfer conveyor situated downstream of the cooling section and upstream of the connection to the receiving plant, the transfer conveyor being associated with a temporary retention zone whereby, on stoppage of the receiving plant, the direction of movement of the conveyor may be reversed to feed treated and cooled material into the retention zone until the hot zone has been cleared, and on recommencement of normal drive to the conveyor, the material in the temporary retention zone will be fed to the connection to the receiving plant. A suitable plant is shown in Fig 2 and comprises heating zone 2a, cooling section 2b, packing system 4 and a transfer conveyor in the form of a cylindrical barrel 6 and rotatable helical screw conveyor 7. On the occurrence of a stoppage in a packing system 4, the rotation of the conveyor 7 is reversed to accommodate product in the "dead end" of barrel 6.
