Abstract

1399673 Abrasive articles ASHLAND OIL Inc 25 Sept 1973 44924/73 Heading C4V An abrasive mix containing encapsulated abrasive grains comprises an abrasive grain having a binder distributed on the surface, the abrasive grain and accompanying binder being encapsulated in a cross-linked thermoset polymer formed by reaction of a hydroxyl functional polymer which is a free phenolic resin, a polyester, an epoxy resin or mixtures of these and a polyisocyanate. The mix may be obtained by distributing a binder and catalytic agent for curing an encapsulant system on the surface, mixing the mixture with the encapsulant system, and continuing to mix so that the system is evenly distributed over the particles of aggregate and binder. The mix is free-flowing and tack-free. The binder may be a resole or novolak, alkyd, furan resin, polyimide, shellac, epoxide, or rubber or a mixture of these. Suitable binders are kaolins, china clays, ball clays and commercially available fritted bonds. Suitable resins for the encapsulant system are listed.
