1399578 Antibiotic XK-62-2 and Gentamicin C ABBOTT LABORATORIES and KYOWA HAKKO KOGYO CO Ltd 23 May 1973 [27 May 1972 11 Sept 1972] 24727/73 Headings C2A and C2C The new antibiotic XK-62-2 characterized as a basic white powder forming acid-addition salts ; containing the elements: C = 51À90%, H = 8À81%, N = 15À18% and O = 24À11%; having a mol. wt. of 463 and a molecular formula : C 20 H 41 N 5 O 7 ; a U.V. absorption spectrum as shown in Fig. 1, an I.R. absorption spectrum as shown in Fig. 2 (main absorption peaks at 610, 1040, 1110, 1285, 1340, 1390, 1460, 1510, 1620, 2050, 2920, 3030 and 3350 cm.<SP>-1</SP>), and an NMR spectrum as shown in Fig. 3 ; showing a specific rotation [α]<SP>20</SP> D = + 116 degrees (C = 1, water); and being soluble in water and polar organic solvents, and insoluble in non-polar solvents, is produced by aerobically cultivating a micro-organism of the species Micromonospora sagamiensis which is capable of producing the said antibiotic, or Micromonospora echinospora ATCC 15837, Micromonospora echinospora var. ferruginea ATCC 15836, Micromonospora echinospora var. pallida ATCC 15838 or Micromonospora purpurea ATCC 15835. The antibiotic XK-62-2 probably has the formula Micro-organisms of the species Micromonospora sagamiensis capable of producing the antibiotic are Micromonospora sagamiensis ATCC 21826, Micromonospora sagamiensis var. flava ATCC 21827 and Micromonospora sagamiensis var. nonreducans ATCC 21803. These strains also produce gentamicin C complex antibiotics, and the invention includes a process for producing gentamicin C antibiotics by aerobically cultivating a micro-organism of the species Micromonospora sagamiensis. Gentamicins C 1 , C 2 and C 1a are thus prepared; also the sulphate salts thereof and of antibiotic XK-62-2 are produced.
