Abstract
1399188 Grain treatment: animal feed FOOD TECHNOLOGY INC 8 Aug 1973 37521/73 Headings A2B and A2D A process for inhibiting mould growth in whole kernels of cereal grain having a seed coat and containing their natural moisture content comprises contacting the grain with a non-toxic, metal diacetate such that the diacetate penetrates the seed coat and inhibits the growth of mould in said grain, and controlling the amount of diacetate in accordance with the amount of moisture in the grain, the amount of diacetate being greater when larger amounts of moisture are present, and being at least 0.4% by weight of the cereal grain. The diacetate may be applied in dry form or as a solution e.g. by spraying. The grain may be corn, wheat, rice or oats. The treated grain is suitable for use as an animal foodstuff. The diacetate is preferably sodium diacetate.
