Abstract
139,892. Replogle, D. B. March 12, 1919. Vacuum cleaning- apparatus. - A vacuum cleaner comprises a suction pipe in sections carrying tools at their ends and connected to a common valve whereby suction may be directed through either end of the pipe. The various parts of the cleaner are standardized, so that they may be incorporated into a portable or a stationary form of cleaner. The apparatus shown in Fig. 1 comprises a floor tool 4 connected by a swivelling joint with a tubular extension 3 of the tubular handle 1. The parts 1, 3 are connected to opposite sides of a valve member 8, Figs. 1 and 2, the valve 12 of which has a port communicating with the fan or fans 17, 17', and a port 10 which may be turned to communicate with either socket 2', 10' of the valve member, so that suction takes place in either direction. The valve is further formed with a transparent top marked with an arrow 44, Fig. 6, indicating its position. The motors 16. 16<1> connected with the fans are connected by a brace 20 and supported by rollers 32 on a hinged base-plate. The fan outlet 18<1> connects with the dust-collector, which comprises a paper bag within an outer cover of coarse mesh. This cover is shown opened out in Fig. 8, the paper liner being inserted through the open slit 24<111> and connected to the mouthpiece; the edges of the cover are provided with strips held between spring clamps 30, 31 on the handle. Current is taken from a plug 41 connected with a lamp socket, the cable being carried by a reel 42 which may be slipped over the handle, and being connected to a switch 35 carried by the clamp 30. The fan is formed from blanks 21, Fig. 7, having lugs a turned up to form blades, two such blanks being welded together. Fig. 11 shows the apparatus in use by connecting a tool 46, to which a brush 47 is attached, to the upper end of the handle, the apparatus resting on the floor tool; the appraratus may also be grasped by the section 3 and used with a rigid tool secured to its other end. When the apparatus is permanently installed, the motors and fans may be placed in the basement of the building, Fig. 13, or in the closets of the railway carriage, Fig. 14, which is to be cleaned. Fig. 13 shows the employment of a common tank 55 within which filtering may take place before the air passes to the fans. In railway carriages, the exhaust may be through a pipe 18<11> to the open air. The motors may be disposed singly as at 50, Fig. 14, or in threes as at 52, or in pairs as at 51, 51', Fig. 13. A flexible hose 45<1> is directly connected to the valve member and to the exhaust pipe system when the motors and fans are separate from the tool.
