Edward L. T/rfiayen BY M. W
United States Patent 3,350,858 UPRIGHT VACUUM CLEANER BAG HOLDER Edward L. Verhagen, Rahway, N.J., assignor to The Regina Corporation, Rahway, N.J., a corporation of Delaware Filed Nov. 1, 1966, Ser. No. 591,335 4 Claims. (Cl. 55-376) This invention relates to means for removably securing a dust collecting bag to an upright vacuum cleaner.
The principal object of this invention is to provide bag holding means simple to use and economical in construction.
Another object .is to improve the reliability of dust collecting bag holding means and to enable quick disconnection from the vacuum cleaner to which it may be attached.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent from the description which follows.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- FIGURE 1 is a side elevational view of an upright vacuum cleaner with its dust collecting bag attached with the use of this invention.
FIGURE 2 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the handle of vacuum cleaner of FIGURE 1 at its exhaust port without the addition of the dust collecting bag.
FIGURE 3 is a fragmentary side elevational view of the dust collecting bag where it fits the exhaust port shown in FIGURE 2.
FIGURE 4 is a front elevational view of FIGURE 2.
FIGURE 5 is a front elevational view of FIGURE 3.
FIGURE 6 is a top view of a section of the vacuum cleaner handle taken just above the connection of the bottom of the dust collecting bag (shown in part) to the handle.
FIGURE 7 is a side elevational view, partly in section, of the vacuum cleaner handle with attached dust collecting bag adjacent to the bottom connection of the bag to the handle.
Referring to the drawings in which the same number refers to the same or a similar part the upright vacuum cleaner shown in FIGURE 1 consists essentially of handle 10, secured to motor housing 11, all being supported on wheels 12.
Upper electric cord holder 13 and lower electric cord holder 14 are mounted on handle 10, to furnish holding means for an electric power cord, not shown in the drawings. Dust collecting bag 15, closed at its upper and lower ends by clips 16 and 17 respectively, is secured at its lower end to handle by hook 18 engaged in slot 19 of clip 17. Hook 18 is carried on pin 21 of collar 22 which encircles handle 10 and serves also as a mount for holder 14. Near its upper end bag is secured to handle 10 over the exhaust pipe 22 of the handle. When air is not being forced into bag 15 its pleated sides appear as shown in FIGURE 1.
Details of the upper connection for bag 15 are shown in FIGURES 2, 3, 4 and 5.
Bore 23 of handle 10 conveys the motor fan driven dust laden air out of the handle, through lateral exhaust pipe 22 and into bag 15 by way of bag opening 24. I
Surrounding opening 24 is rigid collar 25 which on its upper margin has two outwardly extending locking members 28 whose downward extending rims 29 are adapted to be seated in locking engagement behind shoulder 31 atop of ledge 32 on pipe 22. Bevelled surfaces 30 on members 28 face inward to facilitate such locking engagement. Guide ribs 33 on pipe 22 also facilitate such engagement and lie within opening 24 when such is accomplished. Hole 26 in the top surface of collar 24 is located so as to receive locking pin 27 when bag 15 is attached to pipe 22.
Rotatably mounted within and without handle 10, through bore 23, is spring loaded locking pin 27 which is rigidly secured at one end to cord holder 13. This attachment to pin 27 being the only means by which cord holder 13 is held, it is the spring action that keeps its curved inner surface against the curved outer surface of handle 10 while at the same time the spring keeps locking pin 27 extended.
To attach the upper part of bag 15 to handle 10, holder 13 is pulled away from handle 10 and by twisting crossways may hold locking pin 27 in withdrawn position, that is, with its end flush with the outside surface of handle 10. With locking pin 27 in such withdrawn position, rim 25 of bag 15 is slipped over pipe 22 and members 28 seated behind shoulder 31 with the aid of guide ribs 33. Once in this position holder 13 is restored to its normal position causing locking pin 27 to insert in hole 216. Thus the connection between pipe 22 and bag 15 is secured, to be separated only by withdrawing pin 27 from hole 26 and lifting sliding rim 25 from pipe 22.
The bottom connection is detailed in FIGURES 6 and 7.
Collar 20 on handle 10 serves as a mounting for bolder 14 and for pin 21 which is encircled by the coiled spring portion of hook 18. Hook 18 fits in slot 19 of clip 17. Under spring tension hook 18 is urged downward thus maintaining a downward force on bag 15 yet furnishes flexibility so that the bag may be pulled upward in fitting rim 25 over pipe 22 after the bottom has been hooked as shown.
Other applications of this invention may be made and by illustrating the one herein described it is not intended thereby to limit the scope of this invention.
