Abstract
1398640 Photo-electric control of rollers KRAUSS-M AFFEI AG 10 Aug 1972 [20 Aug 1971] 37393/72 Heading G1A [Also in Division G3] The thickness of the mass of plastics material 4 being rolled by calender rollers into a thin sheet, is monitored photo-electrically so as to prevent the possibility of the rollers contacting one another. The position of the edge of the bank 4, indicative of the thickness, in a plane at right angles to that containing the roller axes, is measured by repetitively scanning a light beam 5 across the edge, the unblocked radiation being sensed by cells in linear array 6. The source 1 is a laser which in Fig. 1 is itself oscillated angularly. In other arrangements, it is oscillated on a rectilinear path, Fig. 3 (not shown), or a fixed source co-operates with an oscillated mirror, Fig. 2 (not shown) or an oscillated refraction plate, Fig. 4 (not shown). The varying detector output is used for control on the roller gap and alarm purposes, if necessary. Further, photo-electric systems at each edge of the rollers monitor the roller gap, transverse to the roller axes. Theses are used for starting up the system and only allow switching over to the control system of Fig. 1 when a roller gap below a certain level is reached, indicating that a suitable plastics mass has been formed. The measured thickness may be used in retroactive control to the roll drives, adjustment drives, a roll bending device, or a strip cutting device of a preceding set of mixing rollers. Optical and acoustic alarms may be provided.
