Abstract

1398333 Belt buckles INTERNATIONAL ENG SERVICE INC 4 Aug 1972 36537/72 Heading E2A A three-piece seat safety belt buckle comprises a one-piece, hollow, open-ended housing 22 adapted to be connected to one portion 30 of the belt, a latch lever member 24 disposed within the housing so that it is pivotal about one end 44 thereof and which bears against an upstanding bearing portion 40 on one internal wall of the housing, the member 24 having an actuator portion 42 remote from the end 44 for manual operation of the member and a catch portion 46 located between the end 44 and the actuator portion and for engagement with a belt connector 32 attached to another portion of the belt, and a spring member 26 secured within the housing by retaining means 61 and having a portion 58 biassing the actuator portion 42 about the pivot end 44 and away from the said internal wall having the bearing portion 40 into a position where the actuator portion can be readily engaged by hand. As shown, the base 34 of the housing has an aperture 36 for connection to the belt part 30 and the bearing portion 40 is formed by a reversely folded flange which accommodates the pivot end 44 of the latch lever, and the spring member 26 includes latch lever retainer portions 54. which engage ears 52 on the lever to bias the latter into engagement with the flange 40, and U-shaped guide portions 62 for guiding the belt connector 32 into a coupling position wherein the aperture 64 thereof receives the catch 46, the spring has an extension 70 to close the open end 38 of the housing. In modifications (a) an extended portion of the base 34 Fig. 9 (not shown), of the housing is formed with a seat belt slot and is coated with a plastics material to prevent chafing of the belt, and (b) the latch lever 224, Fig. 11, has a knife edge pivoted end 245 which abuts a pair of upstanding bosses 240, there being a further pair of bosses which provide added support in the event that the bosses 240 are partially sheared under extreme loading conditions; a pair of tabs 276 are struck from the side walls of the housing to prevent the pivot end of the latch lever moving upwardly. A decorative plastics cover may be provided over the housing and for the push button.
