Abstract

1398282 Protecting surfaces of building material NATIONAL PATENT DEVELOPMENT CORP 9 March 1973 [9 March 1972] 11160/72 Heading ASE [Also in Divisions B2 and D1] In a process for improving the durability and weather-resistance of any exposed surface of an inorganic building material, in which the surface is impregnated with a water-insoluble hydrophilic polymer of a hydroxy lower alkyl acrylate or methacrylate, a hydroxy lower alkoxy lower alkyl acrylate or methacrylate, or a lower alkoxy lower alkyl acrylate or methacrylate, to form a moisture vapour-permeable coating on the surface, a microbiocide may be mixed with the polymer and leechably entrapped in the finished coating. Long lists of suitable bactericides and fungicides are given. In Example 9 1% of bis (n-propylsulphonyl) ethylene, and 1% of hexachlorophene, based on the weight of polymer, are mixed with a 5% solution in a 50-50 mixture of ethanol and methyl cellosol of a copolymer formed by reacting hydroxyethyl methacrylate and methyl methacrylate in a weight ratio of 140:60 in ethanol, and the composition sprayed on to a concrete block and a concrete road surface. The resulting coated block and road surface have increased resistance to microorganisms due to the slow release of the microbiocide entrapped in the polymer.
