Abstract

1398090 Testing I C engines BRITISH LEYLAND MOTOR CORP Ltd 1 Nov 1972 [12 Nov 1971] 52551/71 HeadingGlU The invention provides method and apparatus for measuring ignition timing of a spark ignition internal combustion engine by providing first signals corresponding to the instant that the rotation of the engine corresponds to an arbitrary datum angle, second signals corresponding to the instant of the ignition spark and sensing and displaying the phase difference between the first and second signals. NAND gates 11, 12 are crosscoupled to provide a bi-stable circuit whose output 13 is connected to the positive supply 15 via a meter 14 and resistance 16. Pulses occurring at 45 degrees before T.D.C. are derived from a conventional pick-up and fed via pulse shaping transistor 19 to the first input 17 of the bi-stable. The output 13 changes, causing current to be drawn through the meter. Ignition pulses are detected by a toroidal coil wound around the low tension lead of the ignition coil and are passed via transistor 24 to the second input 22 of the bi-stable causing it to reset. The current pulses through the meter are averaged by the meter inertia to provide a measure of the timing which is displayed as an angle relative to T.D.C. After the input pulse from transistor 19, diode 33 becomes reverse biased and capacitor 31 begins to charge. Transistor 34 thus begins to conduct reducing the voltage or bi-stable 30 input. If no ignition pulse is received from transistor 24, the bi-stable is automatically reset, before the next reference signal input pulse.
